H1 arrivals: 3.2 million, −2.4% y/yQ3: focus on investment and tourism, Bali–Phuket flight

Bali today, 6 August 2026: the island drew 3.2 million foreigners in H1 — 2.4% fewer than a year ago

Published: DOMA Journal · daily digest

The headline number today is not a record but an honest minus. In the first half of 2026 Bali received about 3.2 million foreign tourists, 2.42% fewer than in January–June 2025. Australia still supplies one in four visitors to the island, and Russia holds seventh place. For a villa buyer that kind of statistic is more useful than any "growth ahead" forecast: it shows a mature market rather than a booming one — and against that backdrop it is easier to model occupancy soberly.

H1 arrivals: 3.2 million foreigners, down 2.4% year on year, Australia a quarter of the flow

According to BPS-Bali (the provincial statistics agency), tabulated on 4 August 2026 by the Databoks/Katadata portal, Bali received about 3.2 million foreign tourists in January–June 2026 — 2.42% fewer than in the same half of 2025 (3.28 million). Almost all arrived by air: 3.18 million people, with 15,590 arriving by sea.

The country breakdown for the half confirms who actually travels to Bali. One in four visitors is Australian; Russia is the largest source outside Asia and Oceania after Europe's leaders, holding a steady seventh place.

The dip is small and consistent with the whole year: in Q1 2026 the flow grew just 1.4% year on year, and by April it had already turned negative. This is not a collapse but a plateau after several years of recovery.

What it means for investors

A mature market is not bad news, but a reason to count more precisely. When the flow is not growing double digits, a villa's income is driven not by a rising tide but by the work you do with a specific guest: who they are, which country they come from, how long they stay and at what price. Australia and Russia are exactly your target audiences in the EN and RU segments, and you can build on them. How to turn that into real occupancy: who your Bali guest is and dynamic pricing; how to model yield honestly without forecasting your way in: here. Q3 2026: the government prioritises investment and tourism, and a direct Bali–Phuket flight opens

Per Antara (published 6 August 2026), Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said that in the third quarter the government is concentrating on strengthening investment and tourism to support economic growth into year-end. Bali, together with West and East Nusa Tenggara, is named a "key driver" of inbound and domestic tourism, growing faster than the national average. Domestic trips across Indonesia in the half reached 630.41 million — the highest for any half-year since before the pandemic.

One caveat on the fresh monthly figure. The same report gives June foreign arrivals to Bali as 605,013 (+4.63% on May). That is not a "new record": the value differs from the earlier June figure of 623,592 in BPS data — probably different series (direct arrivals versus all entry points, or a revision). It is safer to rely on the half-year total from the first story and read the monthly numbers with that in mind.

One separate detail indirectly sharpens the comparison between destinations: in July 2026 the airline TransNusa launched a direct Bali–Phuket flight, aimed at families, digital nomads and adventure travellers.

What it means for investors

The quarter's state priority is investment and tourism, and Bali is named as growing faster than the average: that is a backdrop that supports demand, but it does not replace due diligence on a specific project. The direct Bali–Phuket flight is a small but telling signal — the two resorts increasingly compete for the same guest, and a purchase location is worth choosing with that in view. A comparison of the destinations and their economics: Bali, Phuket or Dubai; on choosing an area within the island: Ubud or Canggu.
