NPWP (tax identification number)
NPWP (налоговый номер) · Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak
NPWP (Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak) is the taxpayer number DJP assigns to individuals and companies. Since 2024 it is merged with the national ID number (NIK) for citizens; foreigners obtain an NPWP once they hold a KITAS/KITAP and become tax resident (183+ days).
Does a non-resident investor need one? For buying a leasehold and receiving rent through an operator — no: tax is withheld at the 20% non-resident rate (or the treaty rate). An NPWP becomes necessary if you claim the 10% resident rate, register Hak Pakai, want the PMK 90/2025 VAT incentive or open a local bank account for operations.
The flip side: an NPWP as a resident obliges you to declare worldwide income in Indonesia. Decide with a tax adviser, not "just in case".
