What the BPS data show
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) released TPK, the room occupancy rate, for star rated hotels in June 2026. The national average was 54.28%. That is 3.52 percentage points higher than in May and 4.30 points higher than in June 2025.
Bali topped the provincial ranking at 64.87%. Gorontalo came second with 60.68% and Yogyakarta third with 60.36%.
What drove the rise
Ateng Hartono, the BPS deputy for distribution and services statistics, linked the increase to domestic travel during school holidays, public holidays and collective leave days. Returning hajj pilgrims also played a part.
He added that hotel occupancy also tends to follow business activity such as meetings, conferences and other national or international events. Occupancy rose in 36 provinces and fell only in Maluku and three Papuan provinces.
In other words, the June increase was broad and reached almost the whole country, not only tourist destinations.
Context for Bali
June in Bali marks the start of the high season for foreign visitors and coincides with Indonesian school holidays, so strong occupancy is expected. The more telling point is the gap with other destinations, which was more than four points.
For comparison, Bali star hotel occupancy stood at 57.94% in April 2026, according to BPS Bali. The June figure of 64.87% fits the seasonal climb.
BPS also points to business events. That is a real factor for Bali: according to ICCA, the island hosted 54 international association meetings in 2024.
