What is being built
The project is a new road section that straightens the mountain bends between Singaraja in the north and Mengwitani in central Bali. Works are in Gitgit village, Buleleng Regency.
Governor Koster gave 7 January 2026 as the groundbreaking date. Heavy equipment was already on site for preliminary earthworks before the ceremony.
Money and timing
The budget is above Rp 700 billion and comes entirely from the APBN (state budget). The governor said the cost is high because the section has many heavy bridges.
The province has completed land acquisition. Construction should take around two years, running to 2027.
What comes next
The next stage covers points 11 and 12. They are planned to start in 2028, which is still a plan.
Officials describe the goal as cutting travel time between north and south Bali and supporting the northern economy.
Mixed timelines
The road from south to north currently climbs through the Bedugul highlands with many sharp bends. The shortcuts replace the hardest of them with straighter sections and bridges.
Dates for later stages vary. In April 2026 the governor and three ministers listed shortcut points 11 and 12 among 2026-2027 priorities, while in December 2025 their start was linked to 2028. The safest guide is the actual start of works.
The centre funds the works and the province handled the land. This split usually lowers the risk of delays from land disputes, which often hold up road projects in Bali.
