Munduk and Bedugul: highland Bali in numbers

1,200 metres up, cool air, lakes Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingan, coffee and clove plantations. The island's cheapest land: and the most regulated: protected forest and lake zones, both regencies under the 2026 ban, no rental data.

In one line. Highlands: 20 °C, lakes, coffee and land from IDR 35M/are — but building is nearly impossible.

Bedugul (Tabanan) is the Ulun Danu temple, the botanic garden and the strawberry market on Lake Bratan. Munduk (Buleleng) is a ridge village with waterfalls and views to the north coast. Indonesian families come for weekends, foreigners for “the other Bali”: a day or two, rarely longer.

The market is freehold (SHM) farmland from IDR 35M per are, eco-lodges, camps and the odd lake-view villa (one at IDR 14.9B). Building is hard: forest, lake buffer zones, Perda 4/2026 on farmland and the 2026 ban on new hotels and restaurants in both regencies. A market for people buying a landscape, not a yield.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

TempleBedugul, 25 min from Munduk

The temple on Lake Bratan pictured on the 50,000-rupiah note. Built in 1633 for the lake goddess Dewi Danu, its two meru towers stand on islets and seem to float when the water is high. One of Bali's most visited temples, at its best in morning mist. A park, boats and the Bedugul market surround it. At 1,200 metres the temperature is 18–24 degrees.

Lake Buyan, Munduk & Bedugul, Bali

Lake Buyan

Nature10 min from Munduk

The second of the three caldera lakes, the largest and quietest. No temple and no tourist infrastructure: lakeside camping, canoes, a path along the water, morning mist. The road from Munduk to Bedugul runs along the ridge above the lake. The slopes around grow strawberries, coffee and cloves that support the villages. From the Wanagiri road both Buyan and Tamblingan are visible at once.

Lake Tamblingan, Munduk & Bedugul, Bali

Lake Tamblingan

Nature15 min from Munduk

The smallest lake, with Pura Gubug temple on its shore standing in the water at high level. A sacred forest surrounds it and Munduk village bans motorboats: only dugout canoes. Forest trails lead to the village and on to Munduk. The area's best sunrise: mist over the water with the temple towers in it.

Munduk Waterfalls, Munduk & Bedugul, Bali

Munduk Waterfalls

Naturecentral Munduk

A chain of four falls on one trail from the village: Munduk, Melanting, Labuhan Kebo and Golden Valley. A 2–3 hour walk through coffee and clove plantations, with a swim and a café at the last fall. Munduk grew as a Dutch hill station in the 1900s and the old houses still line the main street. Trekking, not the beach, is the pastime here.

Handara Gate

Place20 min from Munduk

The gate of the Handara golf resort on the road from Bedugul to Munduk, one of the island's most photographed spots: a split candi bentar gate against mountains and mist. Wanagiri, Munduk & Bedugul, Bali

Wanagiri

Place10 min from Munduk

A village on the ridge between Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan, known for viewpoints with swings and nests over the drop. Both lakes in one view, best in the morning.
